Waterbodies and Reservoir Network Dataset

Waterbodies and Reservoir Network Dataset

The Waterbodies and Reservoir Network Dataset, part of the CoRE Stack, provides comprehensive information on the number, type, and distribution of waterbodies across India, based on the national Census of Water Bodies. It supports comprehensive hydrological analysis and water resource management by enabling river basin planning, assessment of irrigation infrastructure and water conveyance, evaluation of surface water distribution and utilization, and analysis of water storage capacity and irrigation potential. Together, these capabilities inform agricultural water management, ecosystem restoration planning, and hydrological monitoring across multiple scales.

About Dataset

The Integrated Waterbodies and Hydro Features dataset is a CoRE Stack (Commoning for Resilience and Equality) geospatial layer that consolidates rivers, canals, reservoirs, waterbody census data, and related hydrological features into a unified spatial resource. Derived from national hydrography and water resources datasets, it enables comprehensive hydrological analysis by supporting river basin planning, assessment of irrigation infrastructure and water conveyance, and evaluation of surface water distribution, utilization, and storage capacity. This dataset helps identify irrigation potential, monitor surface water dynamics, and inform agricultural water management and ecosystem restoration efforts. When integrated with other CoRE Stack hydrological and terrain layers, it provides a multi-scale view of water systems for data-driven planning, climate resilience, and sustainable landscape management.

Technical details and methodologies are available in the CoRE Stack Technical Manual: https://core-stack.org/core-stack-technical-manual-v2/

Purpose of Dataset

The Purpose Of The Rivers, Canals, Waterbodies Census, First Census Of Water Bodies, Reservoir, And Reservoir Stations Datasets Together Provide A Comprehensive View Of India’s Surface Water Systems Within The Core Stack. They Map River Networks, Irrigation Canals, National Waterbody Inventories, Major Reservoirs, And Monitoring Stations To Support Hydrological Modeling, Water Distribution Analysis, And Assessment Of Surface Water Availability And Infrastructure Performance. Combined, These Datasets Enable Basin Planning, Irrigation Management, Waterbody Rejuvenation, And Data-driven Water Resource And Resilience Planning Across Scales.
