Two Years of Jal Jeevan Mission is a comprehensive progress report published on 2 October 2021 by the National Jal Jeevan Mission, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. The publication reviews the progress of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) since its launch in August 2019 and presents its vision, objectives, components, institutional arrangements, major initiatives, achievements and the way forward. The report explains JJM’s shift from merely creating water-supply infrastructure to ensuring long-term assured service delivery at the household level. Its vision is to provide adequate quantity and prescribed-quality drinking water through regular and sustainable tap-water supply, with a focus on improving the quality of life and “ease of living” in rural areas. A major milestone highlighted in the report is the increase in rural household tap-water coverage from 3.23 crore (17%) on 15 August 2019 to 8.26 crore (43%) by 2 October 2021, with approximately 5.03 crore new connections provided during the period. The publication covers in-village piped-water infrastructure, reliable water sources, water-quality treatment, retrofitting, greywater management, IEC, capacity building, water-quality testing and surveillance, R&D and community participation. It also highlights functionality assessment, solar-powered water-supply systems, skilling of local workers, water supply to schools and Anganwadi centres, technology interventions and women’s participation in water-quality surveillance.
The purpose of the report is to document and communicate the progress of Jal Jeevan Mission during its first two years. It provides stakeholders with information on achievements, planning, institutional mechanisms, technology, water quality, community participation and major initiatives, while outlining efforts towards sustainable rural drinking-water security and the Har Ghar Jal goal.
