About Dataset

The Swachh Survekshan Grameen (SSG) 2019: National Survey and Ranking Report presents the findings of India's largest independent rural sanitation survey conducted under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin). The survey adopted a mixed-method approach, combining direct observation, citizen feedback, and service-level progress data from the Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) to assess sanitation performance across rural India. The assessment covered 683 districts, 17,209 villages, more than 75,000 public places, over 174,000 key informant interactions, and received over 3 crore citizen responses through mobile applications and 12 lakh responses through IVR, making it one of the most comprehensive sanitation assessments undertaken in the country. The report evaluates the availability and usage of sanitation facilities in schools, Anganwadi Centres, health facilities, markets, religious places, and community toilets, while also assessing litter-free public spaces, waterlogging, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities, citizen awareness, and Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM). District and State rankings were determined using a weighted methodology based on direct observation (30%), citizen feedback (35%), and service-level progress (35%). The report highlights best-performing States and districts, identifies areas requiring improvement, and provides evidence-based recommendations to strengthen sanitation sustainability, behaviour change, and environmental management. It serves as an important monitoring and benchmarking tool for promoting healthy competition and continuous improvement in rural sanitation across India.
