About Dataset

Stories of Change: Cases from Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) of India presents a collection of real-life stories documenting the transformative impact of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) on some of India’s most remote and vulnerable tribal communities. The booklet covers case studies from Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, illustrating how access to safe and adequate drinking water has changed everyday life in PVTG villages. For many communities, water scarcity previously meant long and difficult journeys to distant streams, unsafe water sources, frequent waterborne illnesses and significant loss of time. Women and children carried a disproportionate burden, with children sometimes missing school and women losing valuable time that could otherwise be devoted to household activities and livelihoods. The stories show how household tap connections under JJM have brought clean drinking water closer to families, resulting in improvements in health, hygiene, school attendance, household well-being and livelihood opportunities. The publication also highlights community ownership, women’s leadership, water-quality monitoring, Field Testing Kits (FTKs), Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs), water conservation and sustainable management of water resources. In several communities, women have emerged as active leaders and water-quality monitors. Overall, the booklet portrays JJM as an initiative that goes beyond water infrastructure to promote dignity, empowerment, health, education, economic opportunity and a water-secure rural India.
