“Peyjal: Jan Shakti Ki Abhivyakti” is an inspiring collection of grassroots stories highlighting the transformative impact of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) on rural communities across India. The publication brings together the experiences of members of Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs)/Pani Samitis, who have taken responsibility for planning, implementing, operating and maintaining local water and sanitation infrastructure. The publication illustrates how community participation, collective effort and local ownership are contributing to sustainable water security and improved quality of life. It features stories of women and men who have overcome local challenges through innovation, leadership and determination. The stories demonstrate improvements in drinking water availability, household tap connections, water conservation, water-quality testing and management of village-level water supply systems. The publication also highlights the empowerment of women through training in Field Test Kits (FTKs) for water-quality testing and the engagement of youth as catalysts for awareness and community action. Covering stories from numerous States and Union Territories, the book presents ordinary citizens undertaking extraordinary responsibilities for their communities. It emphasizes that empowered communities, decentralized governance and collaboration between government and citizens are fundamental to sustainable rural development.
