National-symposium-on-safe-water-JJM-WQ-02-02-2024

Proceedings of the National Symposium on Safe Water and Disinfection/Chlorination Initiatives, held on 2 February 2024, documenting discussions, pilot findings, State best practices, drinking water quality testing procedures, chlorination technologies, panel deliberations and the way forward for ensuring safe and sustainable drinking water under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

About Dataset

The National Symposium on Safe Water and Disinfection/Chlorination Initiatives was organized on 2 February 2024 to bring together stakeholders working towards safe and sustainable drinking water under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). The symposium provided a platform for knowledge sharing among the National Jal Jeevan Mission, States/UTs, academic and research institutions, private sector organizations and WASH partners. Its key objectives included sharing experiences on safe water initiatives, disseminating findings from the Evidence Action Safe Water in-line chlorination (ILC) pilot, establishing a national working group on safe water and ILC, and developing a collaborative safe water ecosystem. The document presents findings from an ILC pilot conducted across 18 sites in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, assessing installation feasibility, operational feasibility and consistency of chlorine dosage. Tablet-based passive ILC devices were identified as cost-effective and scalable because they require no electricity, have fewer moving parts and are relatively easy to maintain. The proceedings also highlight State-level best practices, including chlorination technologies, water-quality monitoring systems and digital tools. A proposed Standard Operating Procedure for Drinking Water Quality Testing addresses sampling locations, testing parameters and frequency, laboratory management, remedial action, NABL accreditation, institutional responsibilities and disinfection systems.

Purpose of Dataset

The symposium aims to strengthen safe drinking water delivery under Jal Jeevan Mission by facilitating knowledge sharing, disseminating evidence on effective disinfection and chlorination technologies, promoting appropriate and scalable solutions, improving water-quality testing and surveillance, and fostering collaboration among States, technical institutions, private organizations and WASH stakeholders.
