The NagaNLP NER Annotated Corpus is a human-validated Named Entity Recognition dataset for Nagamese Creole containing 214 annotated sentences. It provides token-level NER annotations for identifying entities such as persons, locations, organizations, and miscellaneous entities in low-resource Nagamese text. This dataset is part of the NagaNLP Toolkit.
The NagaNLP NER Annotated Corpus is a Named Entity Recognition resource developed for Nagamese Creole, a low-resource language used as a lingua franca across Nagaland in Northeast India. The dataset contains 214 annotated sentences and provides token-level annotations for Named Entity Recognition. The corpus covers regional news and everyday topics, including weather, sports, local government, current affairs, agriculture, and other locally relevant content. The NER annotations identify entities using the BIO tagging format and include categories such as Person (PER), Location (LOC), Organization (ORG), and Miscellaneous (MISC). The dataset also contains code-switched English content occurring naturally within Nagamese sentences. This dataset is part of the NagaNLP Toolkit. It is described in: Agniva Maiti, Manya Pandey, and Murari Mandal. (2025). NagaNLP: Bootstrapping NLP for Low-Resource Nagamese Creole with Human-in-the-Loop Synthetic Data. arXiv preprint arXiv:2512.12537. This dataset was identified and facilitated for onboarding as part of the Dataset Onboarding Support Team (DOST) initiative led by CivicDataLab (CDL), partnering with the Gates Foundation in collaboration with BHASHINI. CivicDataLab provided support for dataset discovery, validation, metadata preparation and onboarding facilitation. All dataset ownership and intellectual property rights remain with the original author(s).
The purpose of the NagaNLP NER Annotated Corpus is to provide a foundational Named Entity Recognition resource for Nagamese Creole and support the development and evaluation of NLP systems for this low-resource language. It can be used for NER and token classification, information extraction, entity linking, knowledge base construction, information retrieval, linguistic analysis, multilingual and cross-lingual NLP, language model development, and downstream language technology applications for Nagamese.
