The Manual: Faecal Sludge Management provides technical and implementation guidance for planning and managing faecal sludge in rural areas under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase-II. It addresses in-situ treatment and toilet retrofitting, treatment at existing STPs/FSTPs, deep row entrenchment, planted and unplanted sludge drying beds, reuse of treatment by-products and monitoring of FSTPs.
The Manual: Faecal Sludge Management was developed to guide implementation of Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) as an important component of Solid and Liquid Waste Management under SBM-G Phase-II. It recognises the importance of FSM in rural areas because of the widespread use of on-site sanitation systems such as septic tanks and single pits and the public health and environmental risks associated with unsafe disposal of faecal sludge. The manual provides guidance on planning treatment at the district and village-cluster level, including estimation of faecal sludge quantities, identification of suitable land, clustering of villages and selection of appropriate treatment approaches. The treatment options covered include in-situ treatment and retrofitting of toilets, treatment at existing STPs/FSTPs, deep row entrenchment, planted drying beds and unplanted drying beds.It supports selection and engineering design of FSTPs and preparation of technical DPRs, including designs, drawings, technical specifications, bills of quantities and cost estimates. It also addresses construction, management, operation and maintenance of FSTPs.The manual additionally covers reuse of treatment by-products, monitoring of FSTPs, characterization of faecal sludge, integrated district FSM planning and relevant case studies. It is primarily intended for district-level engineers, planners and officials responsible for FSM implementation.
