The Manual: Biodegradable Waste Management was developed by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation to support rural local bodies in implementing Solid and Liquid Waste Management activities under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase-II. The manual recognises biodegradable waste as a major component of rural solid waste and highlights the potential of organic waste to be converted into useful resources such as compost, organic manure and biogas.The document explains the complete chain of biodegradable waste management, including segregation at source, collection and transportation, treatment and disposal. It provides detailed information on composting processes and different household-level and community/institutional-level composting technologies. It also contains a decision matrix to assist users in selecting appropriate technologies based on local requirementsThe manual further covers funding provisions, stakeholder responsibilities and practical case studies from villages in Punjab, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. It is designed as an implementation-oriented reference for rural local bodies and other stakeholders and provides information on technologies, estimated costs and O&M arrangements to facilitate effective SLWM and achievement of ODF Plus objectives.
