Jal Jeevan Samvad – September 2024 is the 48th edition of the monthly publication of the National Jal Jeevan Mission (NJJM), Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. The edition focuses on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) as the foundation of public health, rural prosperity and community well-being. The publication presents the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in providing Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) to rural households. As on 30 September 2024, it reports 15,18,58,798 rural households with tap-water connections, representing 78.53% coverage, compared with 3,23,62,838 households at the launch of the Mission. It also provides comparative State/UT-wise FHTC coverage and the status of areas achieving 100% household tap-water coverage. A major focus of the edition is the International WASH Conference 2024, organised by DDWS during the 8th India Water Week, with the theme “Partnerships and Cooperation for Inclusive Water Development and Management.” The conference brought together policymakers, experts, academics, practitioners and innovators to discuss sustainable rural water supply, water security, technology, community participation, behaviour change and achieving SDG 6. The issue also covers the National Safe Water Dialogue, focusing on water-quality innovations, community engagement, water-disinfection technologies and the impact of JJM. Discussions included in-line chlorination, water safety, community ownership and technological approaches for delivering safe drinking water. Several articles document State-level WASH innovations and good practices. The Odisha WASH Cell is presented as a model for grassroots capacity building, training and dissemination of sustainable WASH practices, including support to JJM and Swachh Bharat Mission. The publication further highlights sustainable greywater management in Gujarat, wastewater management initiatives in Howrah, community-led solid-waste management in Jitujuri Gram Panchayat, and a Maharashtra case study on addressing social issues and safeguarding WASH rights. Other important themes include Artificial Intelligence and ESG for social impact in rural water management, sustainability of taps and toilets, SMART water-quality monitoring and surveillance in West Bengal, water as a human right, and pilot approaches to greywater management. The West Bengal article particularly describes accredited drinking-water testing laboratories, digital monitoring and API-based integration for real-time water-quality surveillance.
