Jal Jeevan Samvad – November 2023, 38th Edition is a monthly publication of the National Jal Jeevan Mission, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. The edition documents the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission, including Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) coverage, and presents field experiences, initiatives and best practices from across India. As on 30 November 2023, the publication reports 13.70 crore rural households (71.22%) having tap-water connections. The central theme of this edition is Source Sustainability, recognising that the long-term provision of safe, adequate and regular drinking water depends on the protection, conservation and replenishment of water sources. The issue features initiatives involving rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, watershed management, springshed management, greywater management, aquifer restoration and climate-resilient water solutions. The publication highlights the important role of community participation and Village Water & Sanitation Committees (VWSCs/Pani Samitis) in managing water resources, maintaining in-village water-supply infrastructure and promoting sustainable water-use practices. It also documents initiatives involving women and communities in water conservation and resource management. The edition also covers technology-based approaches to source sustainability, including GIS and Hydro Geo-Morphological mapping, IoT-enabled monitoring, artificial intelligence, rainwater harvesting, decentralised wastewater treatment and groundwater recharge. IIT Jodhpur's work on sustainable drinking-water technologies, capacity building, research and education is also featured. In addition, the issue presents the Water Guardians and Water Smart Kids Meghalaya initiatives, success stories from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, efforts in Bundelkhand and Nagaland, and discussions on the intersection of water security and climate change.
