Jal Jeevan Samvad – 26th Edition, November 2022 is a publication of the National Jal Jeevan Mission documenting the progress, achievements, experiences and emerging priorities of the Jal Jeevan Mission and the broader rural WASH sector. The issue provides updated information on Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) coverage and the continuing efforts towards achieving the Har Ghar Jal objective. As of 30 November 2022, the publication reports 10.64 crore rural households (54.98%) having tap-water connections, compared with 3.23 crore households (17%) as on 15 August 2019. A major focus of the issue is water security and sustainable water management. It covers the 7th India Water Week 2022, held from 1–5 November 2022, with the theme “Water Security for Sustainable Development with Equity.” The event brought together policymakers, water managers, professionals, academia, partner organisations and user groups to discuss water security, growing water demand, water cooperation and water governance. The publication gives substantial attention to water quality and public health through the Swachh Jal Se Suraksha campaign. It reports that more than 15 lakh women had been trained nationwide to test water quality using Field Testing Kits (FTKs), with data being uploaded to the WQMIS portal. It also stresses proper disinfection, action against contaminated sources, sensor-based IoT systems and portable water-quality devices. The issue also links safe drinking water with child health and mortality, presenting an assessment of the potential reduction in child mortality through expanded access to safe drinking water. The article estimates substantial potential health benefits from safe-water treatment in the context of JJM. Several State-level case studies showcase the social impact of JJM, including changes in the lives of women in Uttar Pradesh, inclusive water access for the Paraja tribal community in Odisha, and the transformational journey of Pushpawati, described as a Water-woman in Karnataka. The issue further covers the Centre for Sustainable Drinking Water at IIT Jodhpur, localisation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for water-sufficient, clean and green villages, and the role of JJM in international climate and water discussions at COP27. At COP27, JJM was presented in the context of building climate resilience through sustainable and resilient WASH services, community engagement and locally responsive implementation. The publication also emphasises long-term sustainability of water sources and systems, renewable energy, water-user charges, wastewater treatment and grey-water management, along with IEC activities, awareness generation, skill development and capacity building.
