Jal Jeevan Samvad – May 2024 is the 44th edition of the National Jal Jeevan Mission’s monthly publication. The central theme of the issue is Water Conservation, with emphasis on sustainable water resource management, community participation and long-term reliability of rural drinking-water systems. The publication presents the progress of Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) under Jal Jeevan Mission, including the comparative status of States and Union Territories as of 31 May 2024. It reports that more than 76% of rural households had tap-water connections and highlights progress towards the Har Ghar Jal objective. The main articles explore community participation for sustainable water conservation, women’s leadership in water conservation, participatory groundwater management, water conservation practices in Assam, community-led initiatives, and the importance of sustainable water resources for rural drinking-water systems. The issue particularly emphasises community ownership, Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs), Gram Panchayats and participatory planning. The issue also covers practical conservation measures such as rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, greywater management, soak pits, recharge pits, water-body restoration, leak prevention and efficient water use. It highlights the integration of traditional knowledge with contemporary technologies and convergence among government departments and community institutions for sustainable water management. A dedicated section addresses heatwave conditions and the sustainability and reliability of rural water supply, including measures to ensure drinking-water availability in water-stressed areas, groundwater recharge, greywater reuse, functional water sources and grievance redressal. The publication further documents capacity-building and training initiatives, Information Education and Communication (IEC), water-quality assurance, women’s participation, community ownership and field-level innovations, making it a useful record of the Mission’s efforts towards sustainable and resilient rural drinking-water services.
