Jal Jeevan Samvad – 30th Edition, March 2023 is a monthly publication of the National Jal Jeevan Mission that documents the progress, initiatives, achievements and field experiences associated with the Jal Jeevan Mission and related water and sanitation programmes. The issue provides an update on Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) coverage. As on 31 March 2023, 11.64 crore rural households, representing 59.91% of rural households, had tap-water connections, compared with 3.23 crore households (17%) at the launch of the Mission. The publication also presents comparative FHTC coverage across States and Union Territories and the status of Har Ghar Jal across districts, blocks, panchayats and villages. A major theme of the edition is women's leadership and empowerment in the WASH sector. The issue covers the Swachh Sujal Shakti Samman 2023, which recognised women champions working at the grassroots level under SBM(G), JJM and Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain. A total of 36 women WASH Champions were honoured. The publication also focuses on Jal Shakti Abhiyan – Catch the Rain 2023, launched with the theme “Source Sustainability for Drinking Water.” Its interventions include water conservation and rainwater harvesting, inventory and geo-tagging of water bodies, scientific water-conservation planning, establishment of Jal Shakti Kendras, afforestation and awareness generation. The issue presents several State-level stories and good practices, including Uttar Pradesh's experience of transforming the lives of tribal women, Chhattisgarh's Swachh Jal Se Suraksha initiative, Assam's water-security leadership, and a Government-NGO partnership for clean water in West Bengal. It further covers Jal Jeevan Survekshan, which aims to identify gaps in rural water-supply infrastructure and service delivery, promote healthy competition among States/UTs and improve water-supply services through evidence-based planning and monitoring. The edition also records activities concerning Multi-Village Schemes (MVS), statutory clearances, National WASH Expert visits, Community Water Purification Plants, water-quality assessment and implementation monitoring. National WASH Experts visited priority States to assess the quality of ongoing/completed works and the performance of MVS and community water-purification plants. Overall, the publication brings together JJM progress data, policy initiatives, women's participation, water conservation, source sustainability, community-led implementation, State experiences, monitoring activities and field-level developments related to rural drinking-water security.
