Jal Jeevan Samvad – June 2024 is the 45th edition of the monthly publication of the National Jal Jeevan Mission (NJJM), Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. The issue carries the theme “Drinking Water: Well-being and Prosperity” and presents the progress, experiences and initiatives associated with providing safe, adequate and reliable piped drinking water to rural households. The publication provides updated Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) coverage as on 30 June 2024. The accompanying infographic records 14,93,49,661 rural households with tap-water connections, representing 77.31% coverage, compared with 16.75% at the launch of the Mission. It also presents the status of 100% FHTC States/UTs, districts, blocks, panchayats and villages. The issue features articles on the transformative impact of safe tap water, including safe water for rural Indians, Maharashtra’s use of electro-chlorination, Rajasthan’s progress in rural tap-water provision, and the health and development benefits of piped water in Telangana. These stories demonstrate how reliable drinking water can improve health, hygiene, quality of life and the socio-economic well-being of rural communities. A significant focus is placed on water quality monitoring and treatment. The publication discusses electro-chlorination as an innovative approach to providing safe drinking water and highlights the importance of operator training, maintenance, chlorine testing and community participation in sustaining water-quality systems. The publication also explores the relationship between drinking water, health and well-being, women’s leadership and participation in good governance, and the use of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) to raise awareness about health and drinking-water linkages. Another important section covers the STOP Diarrhoea Campaign, a two-month nationwide initiative focusing on safe drinking water, sanitation, handwashing, nutrition, hygiene, ORS and Zinc, along with inter-sectoral coordination among ministries and stakeholders. With the onset of the monsoon, the issue also stresses water testing, rainwater harvesting, water conservation and Jal Shakti Abhiyan – Catch the Rain, emphasising collective responsibility and sustainable management of water resources.
