Jal Jeevan Samvad – June 2023, 33rd Edition is a monthly publication of the National Jal Jeevan Mission (NJJM), Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. The issue presents the latest progress, achievements, initiatives, field experiences and implementation efforts under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The publication is the 33rd edition and was issued in June 2023. The edition primarily focuses on the accelerating progress towards Har Ghar Jal, i.e. providing functional household tap connections and piped drinking water to every rural household. It reports that more than 80.10 lakh FHTCs were installed during the first quarter of 2023-24, representing more than 210% of the achievement during Q1 of 2022-23. As on 2 July 2023, the publication reports 12.45 crore rural households with tap-water connections, representing 64.01% coverage. The issue also highlights the public health and economic benefits of universal tap-water coverage, based on a recently released WHO report. The report discussed potential reductions in diarrhoeal disease, lives saved, DALYs averted and economic savings associated with improved access to safely managed drinking water. It also explains how the Har Ghar Jal programme aligns with the WHO/UNICEF framework for safely managed drinking-water services and Sustainable Development Goal 6. Another important focus is drinking-water quality and water-quality surveillance through the Swachh Jal Se Suraksha campaign. The publication describes efforts to create awareness among Panchayati Raj Institutions and rural communities regarding drinking-water quality. It also covers water-quality testing, Field Test Kits (FTKs) and accreditation of water-quality testing laboratories.
