Jal Jeevan Samvad – July 2024 is the 46th edition of the monthly publication of the National Jal Jeevan Mission (NJJM), Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. The July issue documents major developments and field-level initiatives under the Jal Jeevan Mission, with a special feature on “Best Practices in Coping with Disaster.” A major highlight of the issue is the achievement of 15 crore rural households receiving tap-water connections, described as a significant milestone resulting from the collective efforts of States, partners and communities. The issue also provides the progressive Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) coverage status as on 31 July 2024, reporting 15,03,62,499 rural households with tap-water connections, equivalent to 77.83% coverage. The special feature focuses extensively on disaster resilience and climate-adaptive WASH infrastructure. It presents experiences from flood-prone Assam, including elevated handpumps, water filters, elevated toilets, shelters, water-treatment plants and Water ATMs designed to maintain access to safe drinking water and sanitation during floods. The issue also covers water security in over-exploited groundwater areas of Gujarat, resilience during monsoon challenges in Arunachal Pradesh, women’s participation in water surveillance, community engagement through the “Sujal Swasthya Dharani” initiative in Assam, water-related disaster management in Andhra Pradesh, and measures to combat heatwaves in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Other important topics include Assam’s Jal Doots, safe and sustainable water initiatives, the STOP Diarrhoea Campaign, water quality testing through Field Test Kits, rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, source sustainability, operation and maintenance of water-supply schemes, and community ownership of rural drinking-water systems. The publication therefore serves as a comprehensive record of JJM progress, field experiences, disaster preparedness, water security, WASH resilience and community-led approaches for ensuring sustainable and reliable drinking-water services in rural India.
