Jal Jeevan Samvad – 22nd Edition, July 2022 is a monthly publication of the National Jal Jeevan Mission that documents the progress, achievements, experiences and key initiatives undertaken under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The issue provides updates on Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) coverage, comparative State/UT performance and the expansion of piped water supply in schools and Anganwadi Centres. The edition highlights the progress of Har Ghar Jal and reports that, as of 15 July 2022, approximately 9.80 crore rural households (51.04%) had tap-water connections, compared with 3.23 crore (16.85%) as on 15 August 2019. It also records 100% FHTC coverage in several States/UTs and progress across districts, blocks, Panchayats and villages. A major feature of this edition is the article on the costs and benefits of universal access to safe drinking water, examining operation and maintenance costs, opportunity costs, time saved through household tap connections, health benefits and other socio-economic benefits of improved drinking-water access. The article also emphasizes community involvement in planning, implementation and O&M of rural water-supply infrastructure. The issue presents State-level experiences including academia-government collaboration in West Bengal; women's empowerment through JJM in Madhya Pradesh; WASH in schools among the Kondh tribal community in Odisha; and the “Shuddh Jal Abhiyan” for water-quality awareness in Himachal Pradesh. The publication also highlights education, research and capacity building in the drinking-water and sanitation sector. It covers the launch of a Master's programme at IIT Roorkee, international cooperation with Denmark for the Har Ghar Jal programme, regional Training of Trainers for Level-3 Key Resource Centres, and knowledge-sharing and peer learning among States. The issue gives particular attention to water quality and community-based surveillance. The Himachal Pradesh case study describes the Shuddh Jal Abhiyan, water-quality awareness activities, Field Test Kits, testing laboratories and the training of rural women to test water at source and supply points. It also emphasizes the importance of WASH facilities in schools and Anganwadi Centres, noting their relevance to children's health, education, hygiene and dignity. The edition documents the convergence of State departments and other organisations to provide piped water in schools and Anganwadi Centres.
