Jal Jeevan Samvad – January 2021 (Year 2021, Issue 4) is a publication of the National Jal Jeevan Mission that presents the latest progress, initiatives, achievements and field experiences under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and its vision of Har Ghar Jal. The issue provides an overview of the progress in providing Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) to rural households and highlights the Mission's objective of ensuring potable water supply in adequate quantity and prescribed quality on a regular and assured basis. It also discusses the impact of the Mission on rural communities, particularly women and children, by reducing the drudgery associated with fetching water. A major focus of the issue is the 100-Day Campaign for providing piped water supply to schools, Anganwadi Centres and Ashramshalas, including water for drinking, cooking, handwashing and toilets. The publication also presents progress data and State/UT-level achievements under the campaign. The publication emphasizes the decentralized, demand-driven and community-led approach of JJM, including participatory preparation of Village Action Plans, strengthening of Village Water & Sanitation Committees/Paani Samitis, community-based water-quality testing and operation and maintenance of water-supply schemes. It also highlights the importance of real-time data updating through the JJM Dashboard for monitoring, transparency and evidence-based review. The issue further covers the 15th Finance Commission grants for Rural Local Bodies, drinking water and sanitation, rainwater harvesting, water recycling, greywater management and convergence of financial resources. It also discusses greywater treatment and reuse as an important component of village water budgeting and long-term water security. Technology and innovation are another important theme, including the ICT Grand Challenge for development of a Smart Water Supply Measurement and Monitoring System, undertaken in partnership with the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology and C-DAC. The issue also documents State-level reviews, success stories and inspiring stories demonstrating how rural communities are benefiting from tap-water connections and how partnerships among government institutions, Gram Panchayats, SHGs, UNICEF, technical agencies and other stakeholders are supporting JJM implementation.
