Jal Jeevan Samvad – December 2024 is the 51st edition of the monthly publication of the National Jal Jeevan Mission (NJJM), Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. The theme of this edition is “Jal Jeevan Mission – Stories of Change,” focusing on the transformative impact of providing clean and safe drinking water to rural households. The edition documents the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and its Har Ghar Jal vision, including the status of Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) as of 31 December 2024. According to the publication, 15.40 crore rural households, representing 79.53% of total rural households, had tap-water connections. It also reports 100% FHTC coverage in 11 States/UTs and provides information on districts, blocks, panchayats and villages achieving 100% coverage. A major focus of the issue is the social and economic transformation resulting from household tap-water access. Drawing upon an SBI research study, the publication discusses reductions in deprivation, improvements in dignity and quality of life, women's increased participation in education and economic activities, improved health outcomes and the broader contribution of JJM to rural development. The issue features several stories of change from across India, including 24/7 clean water access in Kolur, Karnataka, water resilience in Mualkhang Village, reduction in migration in Balabehat, women's empowerment, improved access to safe water for vulnerable communities, and the transformation of rural villages through community participation. The Kolur case study highlights uninterrupted potable water supply to all 412 households, supported by smart water meters and community participation. The publication also highlights the role of Panchayati Raj Institutions and community leadership. It covers the National Panchayat Awards 2024, where 45 awardees—including 42 Panchayats and three capacity-building institutions—were recognised for contributions to sustainable and inclusive development. Another important theme is women's empowerment and community-led water management. The issue showcases women as water leaders and community change agents, including the story of Smt. Tamminedi Adilakshmi, whose work in safe-water management demonstrates how JJM can strengthen women's leadership and community resilience. The edition also presents stories from tribal and marginalised communities, illustrating how Functional Household Tap Connections, community participation and locally appropriate water-management systems can address long-standing inequalities and improve dignity, health and livelihoods. Overall, the December 2024 issue presents Jal Jeevan Mission not merely as a drinking-water infrastructure programme but as a people-centred development initiative contributing to women's empowerment, health, education, livelihoods, Panchayat strengthening, social inclusion and sustainable rural transformation.
