Jal Jeevan Samvad – December 2023, 39th Edition is a monthly publication of the National Jal Jeevan Mission, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. The edition presents the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission and documents initiatives, field experiences, innovations and best practices aimed at providing safe and reliable drinking water to rural households. The principal theme of this edition is Water Quality Management. It emphasises that providing drinking water is not only about availability and quantity but also about ensuring its purity, safety and suitability for consumption. The publication discusses water-source testing, purification methods, water-quality monitoring and technological and community-driven approaches to improving water quality. The issue also reports substantial progress under JJM. As on 31 December 2023, approximately 13.97 crore rural households had tap-water connections, representing 72.55% coverage, compared with 16.81% in August 2019. It also highlights the addition of more than 3 crore Functional Household Tap Connections during 2023. A significant part of the edition is devoted to water-quality data and surveillance. It discusses the value of water data points and reports that, as on 27 December 2023, more than 1.44 crore water samples had been tested during 2023–24 through laboratories and Field Testing Kits (FTKs). The publication further showcases community-led water-quality surveillance, digital initiatives such as JJM Brain, the OurWater Bot, water-quality testing mechanisms, and the role of local communities and women in monitoring and managing drinking-water quality. The edition also addresses fluoride contamination, highlighting the need for early detection, continuous monitoring, community engagement, health surveillance, inter-sectoral coordination and sustainable solutions for affected communities. It additionally covers the National Workshop on Water Quality Sustainability, COP28-related discussions on Women & Water, Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra, Jal Jeevan Survekshan and National WASH Experts' visits.
