Jal Jeevan Samvad – April 2025 presents the 55th edition of the monthly publication of the National Jal Jeevan Mission and focuses on the role of local governance in strengthening rural water management. The edition documents the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission, including the expansion of Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs), while emphasizing that sustainable water services require community ownership, accountability and effective grassroots institutions. A key focus is the growing role of Gram Panchayats and Village Water & Sanitation Committees (VWSCs/Pani Samitis) in planning, implementing, monitoring and maintaining village water-supply infrastructure. The publication presents examples from different States where communities have taken ownership of water systems, revived stalled schemes, protected water sources, managed water supply and strengthened local accountability. The issue includes several grassroots success stories, such as the transformation of Mahammad Bazar in West Bengal under the leadership of Smt. Uma Banerjee, where community participation and Panchayati Raj Institutions helped provide Functional Household Tap Connections and improve health, hygiene and livelihoods. The publication also highlights the transformation of water-scarce villages and tribal communities, including Uphri in Madhya Pradesh, where Jal Jeevan Mission and the Pradhan Mantri Janman initiative helped bring piped water to households that had previously depended on distant and unsafe water sources. The edition further covers rural water quality, community engagement, water-quality interventions, hand hygiene, knowledge-based community empowerment and recognition of dedicated water workers. It emphasizes that infrastructure alone is insufficient and that sustained community involvement is essential for acceptance, operation, maintenance and long-term sustainability of water services. Another important theme is the relationship between water, sanitation, hygiene, nutrition and child health. The edition documents DDWS participation in Poshan Pakhwada 2025 through the campaign “Shuddh Jal aur Swachhta Se Swasth Bachpan”, promoting safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene as essential elements of healthy childhood and nutrition. The edition also provides JJM progress data as on 30 April 2025, reporting 15.60 crore rural households with tap-water connections, representing 80.57% of rural households, along with details of States/UTs, districts, blocks, panchayats and villages achieving 100% FHTC coverage. Overall, the April 2025 edition portrays Jal Jeevan Mission as a people-led and decentralized water-management movement, where Panchayats and communities play a central role in ensuring reliable water supply, conservation, accountability and long-term water security.
