About Dataset

Indian Petroleum Statistics 1982–83 presents an extensive statistical overview of India’s petroleum industry, documenting its historical development and operational performance through 1982–83. The publication begins with a detailed chronology of important events in the history of India’s petroleum industry, followed by industry highlights, an at-a-glance profile from 1970–71 to 1982–83, petroleum-industry growth statistics, and petroleum-energy indicators. The Exploration and Production section covers crude-oil and natural-gas reserves, the number of deep-drilling rigs, wells and metreage drilled by ONGC and OIL, well status, and state-wise achievements of geological, geophysical and drilling field parties. It also presents company-wise and state-wise crude-oil production and state-wise natural-gas production and utilisation. The Refining section provides refinery capacity as of 1 April 1983, crude throughput, petroleum-product production, refinery-wise crude charged and product output, and refinery production patterns. Consumption/Sales statistics cover petroleum-product consumption from 1948 onward, product-wise consumption, seasonal indices, oil-company market participation, bunker deliveries, state-wise sales, per-capita and sector-wise consumption, railway diesel, naphtha, LSHS/HHS and fuel consumption in power stations. The Foreign Trade section covers imports, exports, export earnings, revenues from indigenous crude, trade balances, OPEC trade and foreign-exchange reserves. Additional sections cover manpower, prices, dealer commissions, excise/custom duties, royalty, oil-development cess and state sales taxes.

Purpose of Dataset

It supports analysis of petroleum exploration, reserves, drilling, crude-oil and natural-gas production, refining, consumption, sales, foreign trade, manpower, prices and taxation. Long-term series enable comparison across calendar and financial years, while company-wise, state-wise, refinery-wise, product-wise and sector-wise statistics provide detailed analytical coverage. The chronology and important events section adds historical context to quantitative information. The publication is useful for researchers, policymakers, industry analysts and institutions examining India’s petroleum and energy-sector development.
