About Dataset

This dataset provides India-level and state/UT-wise data on the total number of beggars and vagrants as recorded in Census 2011. Unlike the state-only version, this dataset includes the national aggregate figure alongside state-level breakdowns. Sourced from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, it supports national-level destitution analysis, inter-state comparison, and planning for the SMILE scheme for comprehensive rehabilitation of persons engaged in begging.

Purpose of Dataset

To analyse India and state/UT-wise beggary and vagrancy prevalence from Census 2011 for national destitution mapping and SMILE scheme baseline planning.
