The Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) for 2022–23 and 2023–24 collects detailed data on household consumption of both food and non-food items across rural and urban India. It records information on the quantity, value, and frequency of consumption for a wide range of goods and services, including cereals, pulses, milk, vegetables, fuel, clothing, education, health, transportation, and durable goods. By capturing expenditure patterns at the household level, the HCES provides a comprehensive picture of living standards, consumption behavior, and economic well-being across different income groups, regions, and social strata. These surveys are critical for understanding changes in household spending patterns over time, especially following the pandemic and economic shifts.
Purpose Is To Estimate Poverty Lines, Inequality Measures, And Consumption-based Living Standards; To Update The Consumer Price Index (Cpi) Weighting Baskets; To Analyze Regional And Demographic Differences In Spending On Food, Health, Education, And Other Essentials; To Study The Impact Of Government Policies (E.g., Subsidies, Cash Transfers, Gst) On Household Budgets; To Compute Household Savings Rates Indirectly Through Expenditure Patterns; And To Model Demand Elasticity For Various Commodities. The Data Also Supports Macroeconomic Analyses Of Private Consumption, A Key Component Of Gdp.
