A comprehensive compendium documenting 50 behavioural interventions designed to promote sustainable behaviours under Jal Jeevan Mission, including uptake and payment for services, community participation, water quality, and sustainable water use.
The Jal Jeevan Mission – Compendium of Behavioural Best Practices, published in December 2023, presents a collection of behavioural solutions aimed at strengthening the implementation, community engagement and long-term sustainability of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). The compendium has been developed through extensive primary and secondary research, stakeholder consultations, field research and behavioural science-based ideation. It documents interventions implemented primarily in India, along with selected international examples from the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) sector. The publication curates 50 behavioural interventions across four major areas: Uptake and Payment for JJM Services; Community Participation, Ownership and Maintenance; Water Quality; and Sustainable Water Use. These interventions address behavioural barriers and identify practical levers and solutions to encourage households and communities to adopt desired behaviours. Examples include household stickers, utility-bill bundling, water murals, digital billing, exposure visits, community feedback mechanisms, WhatsApp chatbots, youth mobilisation, Jal Utsav, Jal Sahiyas, water-quality demonstrations, testing initiatives, conservation campaigns, social recognition and water-saving interventions. The compendium also provides a step-by-step framework for practitioners to identify behavioural goals, understand barriers and levers, select suitable interventions, monitor results and adapt implementation to local circumstances.
The purpose of the compendium is to provide practical, evidence-informed behavioural solutions that can help JJM practitioners and stakeholders encourage community participation, ownership, regular payment, water-quality awareness, judicious water use and greywater management. It serves as a resource for adapting, implementing and evaluating behaviour-change interventions according to local needs and contexts.
