Block-level dataset on the construction of dugwells across India up to 1986–87 and during 1987–88, sourced from the 2nd Minor Irrigation Census (1993–94).
This dataset presents information on the construction of dugwells at the block level across India, compiled during the 2nd Minor Irrigation Census (1993–94) conducted by the Ministry of Water Resources (now Ministry of Jal Shakti). It provides figures in absolute numbers for dugwells constructed up to 1986–87 and those constructed during 1987–88, disaggregated by State, District, and Block. Dugwells represent one of the oldest and most significant sources of groundwater irrigation in India. This dataset serves as a historical record of groundwater development trends, regional disparities, and block-level irrigation infrastructure. It is useful for researchers and policymakers to analyze the growth of minor irrigation through dugwells, study groundwater dependency, and support planning for sustainable resource use.
