Block-level dataset on construction of dugwells across India up to 1993–94 and during 1994–95, compiled from the 3rd Minor Irrigation Census (2000–01).
This dataset provides detailed information on the construction of dugwells at block level across India, compiled during the 3rd Census of Minor Irrigation Schemes (2000–01) conducted by the Ministry of Water Resources (now Ministry of Jal Shakti). It contains absolute numbers of dugwells constructed up to 1993–94 and those constructed during 1994–95, categorized by State, District, and Block. Dugwells have historically been a key source of groundwater irrigation, and this dataset highlights the extent and growth of such structures in rural India during the period. Policymakers, researchers, and water resource managers can use the dataset to analyze regional trends in groundwater extraction, irrigation development, and to assess sustainability challenges of traditional irrigation practices.
