Peyjal Samvad of District Water & Sanitation Mission (DWSM), Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, showcasing the district’s implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), innovative solar energy-based mini water supply schemes, Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs), PM-JANMAN interventions, water quality testing, community participation and sustainable operation and maintenance practices.
This Peyjal Samvad presents the drinking water challenges and innovative solutions adopted by the District Water & Sanitation Mission (DWSM), Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). Before intervention, only 8.37% of rural households had tap connections, while difficult terrain, dense forests, scattered habitations, poor connectivity and high operation and maintenance costs posed major challenges to reliable drinking water supply. The district adopted a differentiated approach comprising Pipe Water Supply (PWS) Schemes for habitations with populations above 500 and Solar Energy Based Mini Water Supply Schemes for smaller habitations. Through this model, FHTC coverage increased from 8.37% to 93%. The presentation reports 1,082 JJM schemes, of which 1,033 were completed, including 318 PWS and 764 solar mini water supply schemes. Under PM-JANMAN (PVTG), all 126 schemes were completed. A key innovation is the solar dual-pump system, combining solar-powered pumping with a manual hand pump to provide reliable water access. The document also highlights water quality testing through Field Test Kits, women coordinators, sturdy FHTCs, integrated ferrules, HDPE distribution networks, rainwater harvesting and community-led initiatives such as the Kuwakodi Janbhagidari success story. Operation and maintenance arrangements include five-year contractor support followed by Gram Panchayat responsibility and regular functionality checks.
The purpose of this Peyjal Samvad is to document and showcase Gadchiroli’s innovative approach to rural drinking water supply under Jal Jeevan Mission, particularly solar-powered mini water supply schemes, FHTC expansion, PM-JANMAN coverage, water quality monitoring, community participation, sustainable operation and maintenance, and locally adapted solutions for remote and challenging habitations.
