About Dataset

This document presents a Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) success story from Nivoshi village, Lanja Block, Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, focusing on community participation and women-led management of the rural drinking-water supply scheme. The retro-fitting scheme covers Nivoshi habitation and was designed for a projected population of 492, with 101 households. The scheme included construction of an RCC Ground Service Reservoir (GSR), distribution lines and a trial run, with a total estimated cost of ₹9.34 lakh. The work was completed on 31 May 2022. The initiative involved coordination among WATSAN, Rural Water Supply, MSRLM, BDO and Self-Help Groups (SHGs), including training on roles and responsibilities related to operation and maintenance. Nivoshi was declared a “Har Ghar Jal” village on 8 March 2023, with certification completed on 24 July 2023. The scheme was handed over to Kranti Utpadak Self-Help Group, which undertakes water-tax collection, maintenance and repair activities. The women members also conduct sanitary surveys, water testing and chemical inspections using water-testing methods, while undertaking minor repairs. A 2% incentive is provided by the Gram Panchayat for 100% water-tax recovery. The model demonstrates women’s leadership, community ownership and local capacity-building for sustainable rural water-supply management.

Purpose of Dataset

The purpose of this document is to showcase Nivoshi village as a community-led Jal Jeevan Mission success model, demonstrating how women’s Self-Help Groups can manage rural water-supply systems through operation and maintenance, water-quality surveillance, water-tax collection and community participation, thereby strengthening sustainability, ownership and women’s empowerment.
