A collection of 101 inspiring stories showcasing women’s leadership, empowerment and community participation in implementing and sustaining Jal Jeevan Mission and ensuring safe, reliable tap-water supply in rural India.
“101 Glimpses of Women Power: Through the Prism of Jal Jeevan Mission” is a compilation of inspiring stories that showcases the transformative role played by women in achieving the objectives of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) across rural India. The publication presents diverse experiences of women as Sarpanches, Village Water and Sanitation Committee (VWSC) members, Water User Committee members, pump operators, Jal Mitras, Field Test Kit users, Self-Help Group members and community leaders. Through stories from different States and Union Territories, the publication demonstrates how women have moved beyond being beneficiaries of rural water supply to becoming active participants in planning, implementation, monitoring, operation and maintenance of water-supply systems. Their contributions include preparing Village Action Plans, mobilising communities, collecting water user charges, conducting water-quality testing, undertaking minor repairs, promoting water conservation and ensuring equitable household tap-water coverage. The stories also highlight how access to tap water reduces the drudgery of collecting water, saves time, improves health and safety, supports education and creates opportunities for women's skilling, livelihoods and economic empowerment. The publication ultimately presents women as water leaders and change-makers, demonstrating the importance of community ownership, inclusive governance, collective action and sustainable rural water management under JJM.
The purpose of the publication is to document and showcase 101 inspiring examples of women’s leadership and empowerment under Jal Jeevan Mission. It highlights their contribution to rural water governance, community participation, water-quality management, operation and maintenance, skilling and sustainability, while demonstrating how safe tap water can improve women’s lives and strengthen communities.
